01 ✝ Checkmate
Who: Maron Kusakabe and OPEN
When: Spring 6
Where: The woods outside of town
What: Maron ran into some unhappy wood wolves
Rating: PG
What had started as a pleasant walk through the woods and another opportunity to find the way to return home had now become something more dangerous. Maron ran through the woods, pushing branches aside and getting whipped by the leaves as they lashed at the girl trying to escape.
“Why are they chasing me? I thought they were supposed to be friendly?”
Maron spoke to herself as she continued her run. She was fast but the pack of Wood Wolves behind her was faster and they were gaining ground. She considered that if she could transform into Jeanne she could use her ‘rebound ball’ to escape from the animals and hide in one of the nearby trees, but she hadn’t been able to transform into her alternate self since she arrived.
Alright! It was just down to her then! She might not have magical powers but she was still:
Strong and serious...
Matchless and marvelous...
Energetic and fearless!
Maron stopped running and turned back to the pack surprising all of them as she leapt into the air and through a series of gymnastic flips ended up behind them. As the wood wolves skidded to a stop and tried to recover their previous advantage Maron took off running again. At least now she was heading in the direction back toward the village. She just had to find some way to give these creatures the slip...

"How was I supposed to know? We have dogs in Momokuri, not wolves!"
It was not a huge city like Tokyo but it was a decently sized one. Most of the wildlife stayed away and they definitely wouldn't have had packs of wolves running down the streets. This country lifestyle was a very new way of living for her.
The animals didn't really leave at the request. They had these two surrounded and they seemed prepared to stare them down all day if nessacary, but at least they didn't try to approach or snap at either one of them.
"If they weren't trying to attack I wonder what they want."
Curious now, Maron knelt on the ground and held out her hand. Earlier Yuuka had wondered if she had found a human with a bleeding heart, well this action would surely prove that to be correct.
"I wonder if there is something we can do to help them."

Never heard of Momokuri herself. Then again, a youkai being in a city would be a rare event. The border witch would have a better idea about humanity and their settlements, but it wasn't her business really. For a race that drove them into Gensokyo, they could be pathetic.
The staring contest continued, but she glanced over at the human girl as she knelt down and extended her hand. Ugh, this was too much. Should've left the girl to be chased.
"Leaving them be would be the wisest decision..."

As she spoke one of the animals hopped closer, gave her hand a sniff, and then quickly hopped away. The wolves seemed to be gradually getting used to the pair of odd creatures that had entered their woods. They were calming down and scampering around them a little less than they had been before.
"I think we just scared each other."
And she could smile about it now that the threat seemed over.

"Yes, you were both terrified pups. Good bye~"
There were other, more important things she needed to concern herself with such as why her magic was minced at the moment. She headed off, not planning to look back.

"Are you going farther into the woods?"
And not back to the town? Maron stayed where she was not intent on following the girl if she wanted to leave but she was concerned for her.
"Be careful if you go too far. We don't know what all is out there."

She tossed the girl a look over her shoulder, smiling.
"I'll be in the village by nightfall. You should return before the rain lest you want to fall ill..."
Parasol covering her again, she disappeared into the foliage and continued on into the forest.
